Sixty design and advertising professionals from different generations gathered on January 11 at «EMCUENTRO»

The first activity of the year by the Association of Design and Advertising Communication Professionals of the Region of Murcia (DIP) was designed to present the actions planned by the ‘Design Memory of the Region of Murcia’ working group for 2025 and to gather in a warm and relaxed environment with a good number of its key figures.

The group Memoria del Diseño Región de Murcia de dip has organized a new face-to-face call in which it will be possible to talk with some of the pioneers of design The Finca San Antonio, located in Sangonera la Seca (Murcia) was the place chosen by the organization to summon lovers of design and advertising communication of all ages to the creative gastro event «EMCUENTRO» .

And there, on Saturday, January 11th, around midday, sixty people gathered, including seasoned professionals such as Severo Almansa, Teresa Arnal, Ángel Fernández Saura, Antonio Martínez Mengual, Paco Salinas, Eduardo Saro, and the host of the venue, Francisco Martínez Almagro; driving agents like Paco Solano and Amalia Fernández (Imprenta Novograf), Pedro Manzano (collector and researcher), Jesús Serrano (founder of Murcia Visual), and Antonio García Jiménez (co-founder of Continuum Afectivo).

Alongside them were the young designers Elisa García Torregrosa, daughter of Joaquín García ‘Chipola’, and Mencía Salamanca García, daughter of Carlos Salamanca, the photographer Pablo Almansa, son of Severo Almansa, and about thirty more people, students, members, and allies of DIP, who wanted to join the key figures of the moment.

Thus the day went by

As planned, «EMCUENTRO» began with welcome words from the owner of La Finca San Antonio and the president of DIP, Juana Valcárcel, followed by a speech from the project coordinator, Teresa Jular, who started by recalling that the ‘Design Memory of the Region of Murcia’ working group of DIP was created at the end of 2023 to promote a non-normative digital archive, providing information and paying tribute to those who have been responsible for the modernization and socio-economic development of Murcia through the different applications of design — graphic, product, fashion, interior, etc. — and advertising.

The founding objectives of MDRM_DIP are to value design and advertising communication (something inherent to a professional association like DIP); to promote the knowledge and recognition of those who have contributed decisively to cultural and business development through these disciplines, and to act against ageism, against the discrimination faced by older people (including designers and advertisers), recognizing the positive impact of their knowledge and experience and emphasizing the importance of intergenerational cooperation.

After mentioning the colleagues who are part of the MDRM_DIP working group, with some absences due to professional reasons, ‘Así fue RE-CONOCIMIENTO y DISEÑAR LO POR VENIR’ was shown, an audiovisual summary of the presentation day that took place in June 2024 at the General Archive of the Region of Murcia. The coordinator of MDRM_DIP then informed about the three main actions planned for 2025: expanding the project website, regiondemurcia.design, with more interviews, documents, and the option to submit comments on each Protagonist, to be developed collectively and with the team led by Fernando Marín and Andrés Montalbán; expanding the experience of the intergenerational fanzine workshop held in 2024 with students from the Higher School of Design (Edi) and designers Vicente Martínez Gadea, Desiderio Guerra, and Juan Álvarez, with the support of the director, Armando Cano, and the professor Carmen Iranzo (both present at ‘EMCUENTRO’); and tackling the publication of a bilingual Spanish-English book, yet to be conceived, to give visibility to the project beyond the regional scope.

After 1:00 PM, it was time to open the microphone to the public to share their thoughts on ‘Why make a memory of Design,’ a session led by Jorge Martínez, founding member of DIP, who began by reminding everyone that in 2025, the association will celebrate its 15th anniversary, during which it has been able to grow and involve young people; organize continuous educational, recreational, and cultural activities; work side by side with people from other associations, entities, and administrations; create networks to defend rights and support the profession at a time of great significance.

He also highlighted the importance of the ‘Design Memory of the Region of Murcia’ project, ‘the consolidation of which will have more than justified the effort to launch DIP during these 15 years of intense work, in which many colleagues have pushed and fought to ensure that DIP remains a reality and continues to serve the interests of those of us who are part of a profession we love and in which we still strongly believe.

The creative added, ‘A fourth objective, which we did not foresee at the time, and which throughout this process has perhaps become the most important of all, is care, from a purely human and emotional perspective. Through our interviews and conversations with the protagonists to shape this design memory of the Region of Murcia, we have become aware that our work goes far beyond collecting, organizing, and cataloging. In each of these conversations, doors are opened that are related to emotion, to memories that constitute the essence of the people. Because behind all these names of studios and professionals, behind their work, what truly resides is human nature and impulse. The pride in materializing this project often intertwines with the emotion of discovering works that speak to us of a time, a moment, that we miss, that will never return, and that must help us understand where we come from, know our roots, and realize that what we enjoy today is the result of the work of others who, long before, laid the foundations and paved the way.

The dozen people who spoke next agreed on the relevance of the project and unanimously expressed their gratitude for the work of DIP. Furthermore, the importance of continuing to explore in order to not forget anyone and to ensure that everything learned is transferred to society was mentioned. In this context, the collaboration of DIP in response to the call from audiovisual producers Carlos Belmonte and Pablo Nieto for a series in preparation dedicated to regional advertising was highlighted. The event also featured, with their products, ASSIDO Design, the inclusive brand of the Murcia-based NGO.

Before moving on to the buffet meal to continue conversing and sharing, some ‘M’s as souvenirs and copies of the fanzine ‘Ganas y Canas’ that had been pending since last June were handed out.

The sunny and warm weather helped everyone enjoy, alongside the artworks and crafts housed in the restaurant, the terraced spaces of the estate, and visit its orchards and animals until the evening, which ended with music and karaoke.

Not everything is happiness

However, as Jorge Martínez rightly recalled, ‘in this project there is also sadness and anger, for those who leave us suddenly and whom we will never be able to interview.’ This is the case of designers Antonio Ballester, Chipola, and Antonio Álvarez, who passed away in 2024, and Faustino Fernández Conejero, founder of «El taller», who died the day after this event. And there are many others who are currently convalescing from illnesses and surgeries, to whom, without disturbing their rest and with the help of their loved ones, the MDRM_DIP group is trying to include.

The ‘Design Memory of the Region of Murcia’ project is made possible thanks to the funding from DIP, the Ministry of Culture and Sports (through the Grants for Promotion and Cultural Action received in the 2023 and 2024 calls), and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Sports of the Region of Murcia, with the collaboration of the General Archive of the Region of Murcia.

And, very notably, thanks to the collaboration of the Higher School of Design (Edi), the DEA Students Association, the company CartonLab, the Paparajote studio, and many people, members, and friends of DIP, in a collaborative effort that has only just begun.
