Antonio Álvarez Montalbán

Multimedia Designer / Cultural Producer

Mula, 1965 – Murcia, 2023

Antonio Álvarez died in December 2023, at the age of 55. He was a multimedia designer, director and soul of the Manga and Japanese Culture Salon, as presented by his grieving parents, his three brothers and his six nephews, in the obituary published in the press. His numerous friendships were also distressed and, of course, myself, because I had a lot of contact with Antonio, with whom I collaborated in several professional projects, and I feel great affection for all the members of his family.

His sister Carmen tells me about him: “Antonio was born in Mula, before our parents sold the shoe store they had there and moved to Murcia with the whole family, in order to give us more opportunities. I remember well how he was as a child: a whirlwind, very restless, funny… He drew non-stop, modeled with plasticine, invented a thousand things. I was only 17 months older and we spent a lot of time together, we made our own games… The Monopoly boards, for example. Or we’d crawl into a closet and play with dashboards we’ve made, like we’re in a spaceship. And so on and so forth; he was creative to the core.”

And he continues: “As a child, he won several contests. One of plasticine nativity scenes, in Galerías Preciados. And another in which he won the first prize in his category, at about 5 years old, and Juan, at 13, a special prize in his. It was our mother who encouraged them to participate and took us there. They had to draw the Cathedral of Murcia from life; Juan will remember better.” Carmen is referring to her brother Juan Álvarez Montalbán, one of the most renowned comic artists we have in our region, a visual designer, a DIP colleague, partner and ally of her brother in many creative projects, which completes the fact: that prize that Carmen cites, created especially in view of the result, was endowed with 25,000 pesetas from the year 1973! Of course, in jewelry from Joyería Carreras, a sponsoring business.

Antonio, who studied a degree in Computer Science, was one of those people who could disassemble a machine in all its parts, reassemble it and make it work. He was the founder of the advertising agency A2 Comunicación e Imagen, from which he tackled numerous graphic and multimedia design works.
With his brother Juan and Jorge Gómez as directors, Antonio was the executive producer of a pioneering and highly successful event: the Salón del Manga y la Cultura Japonesa, Murcia se remanga, with an annual edition in Murcia held from 2010 to today; another in Cartagena, Cartagena rolls up its sleeves, and the last one, created in 2022, Lorca rolls up its sleeves. Pioneering, joyful and fun events, which summon tens of thousands of otakus of all ages every year to spend a few days of healthy fun and diverse learning.

Encouraged by this success and despite still being immersed in the global economic crisis that began in 2008, Antonio conceived in 2012 the Salon Erótico del Levante, this time only for adults, offering cinema, Striptease and other usual merchandise on the subject, and also opening a space for culture and art, since erotic comics by Juan Álvarez and Jorge G. published in Playboy USA, pictorial work by Pepe Yagües and Ángel Haro and photographs of Ángel Fernández Saura. Four editions of SEL were held, three at the IFEPA exhibition centre in Torrepacheco and one in Alicante.

A2 Comunicación e Imagen and XL internet, the studio that this writer co-founded with Daniel Caballero in 1998, were collaborators on several occasions. I clearly remember our time at the Manga Salons of Murcia, in whose first three editions we participated by making a digital publication in real time, “El Remangazín”. With our personalised T-shirts with the ninja mascot of the show, we settled there for the three days it lasted to bring to a blog and social networks an unpublished and very fresh and innovative material: video interviews with personalities from manga, cosplay, collecting, video games, music, dance…

After that first stage together, the A2 team autonomously tackled the digital communication of the event, which was no longer limited to the fairdays, as they organized smaller thematic activities throughout the year. The care of the Murcia Association is rolled up and the growing community of faithful participants in the salons, is something that Antonio was very clear about from the beginning.

Another project in which we are involved was Murcia Educadora, promoted by the Education Service of the City of Murcia for the school community for more than twenty years and for whose A2 Comunicación camps contributed graphic design on more than one occasion.

I ask Carmen Álvarez about Antonio’s interest in literature and she tells me that, indeed, he wrote a lot. That he finished several stories and won a literary contest promoted by the City Council of Mula. And that he conceived a mystery book based on video games, which he did not get to publish. We were able to read his Summer Stories and opinions on current affairs in collaborations in the newspaper La Opinión and in several radio programs. Also his Facebook channel, where we will still find milestones that help us to get to know him a little more: his video mapping projected on facades of different regional towns; his gratitude to those who saved his life as a result of the robbery he suffered in 2019; the learnings from confinement, focusing on 3D; his presence at the official ceremony of the Embassy of Japan organized to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and Spain…

Antonio was the creator and screenwriter of Hemomán, a superhero to raise awareness among young people about the importance of donating blood. Drawn in 1995 by Juan Álvarez and coloured by Jorge G. with the Regional Blood Donation Centre of the Ministry of Health as a client, it was republished in 2007 with a print run of 20,000 copies.

I don’t want to forget that, in addition to being a very active creative man with a great sense of humor (like the entire Álvarez Montalbán family), he was an assertive, enjoyable and… flirtatious. Their hairdressers, who are also mine, remind me of this when I tell them about this portrait.

Antonio was a very good friend of his friends, so I put here the end, hoping that the journalist Ángel Montiel, the painter Enrique Nieto, Fuensanta Martínez Lozano, the current director of the FFIS, and so many people who appreciated him, will give us comments and help us to get to know him better.
